I'm so excited to share another update on this Nashville lake house. This cozy rustic cottage actually belongs to my brother and sister-in-law. They have been working so hard over the past two years to make this cottage as cute as it is and their hard work is definitely paying off. I shared a tour of their house at this time last year so you can see how far they've come over the past 12 months. They originally gutted the house and have been rebuilding it bit by bit. Which is pretty amazing since they both have demanding jobs in the city and they do all the work themselves whenever they can make the 45 minute drive on the weekends. This cute little cottage is definitely share-worthy! Let's take a look.
The outside of the home has seen some drastic changes over the past twelve months. The lake house was previously painted red which had worn over time and looked dated. They freshened up the exterior with a new coat of blue paint and added some texture to the exterior with cedar shake.
The house sits on a hill that slopes down to a lake below. Offering up amazing views of the trees and the lake below.
Down the hill a bit is the shed that they painted to match the house. The shed doesn't interfere with the view but compliments the house perfectly and provides much needed storage space.
They have put so much thought into the details to make this a true lake house. Even right down to the porch light. I love this coastal look!
Once you step through the front door, you look directly into the kitchen and family room. You'll feel the coziness and warmth of this house right when you step in. Since last year, they have painted the walls in Ben Moore's Sea Salt, which makes the space feel inviting and open.
They just updated the fireplace this year and I'm obsessed with it. They saved the original brick, built chunky columns around it and framed in the TV. This adds so much dimension to the room and creates a beautiful feature in the compact space. The grayish blue paint that they used on the columns makes the feature stand out even more than had they just painted it white. I love those columns (note: add chunky columns somewhere in my house).
They brought in salvaged barn wood to create unique textural detail throughout the home. You'll see the barn wood used throughout, like in the kitchen around the sink cabinet and the refrigerator.
Barn wood was used as a face and detail in the bar area, and you'll see it on walls and railings throughout their home as well. All of the barn wood came from an old tabacco barn on my sister-in-law's family home in Kentucky. Not only did this save some money, but it was also a smart use of material and it added so much character!
The kitchen cabinets were all pre-existing oak cabinets. Last year, we visited while they were in the process of refinishing them with a coat of paint and glaze. I think they turned out amazing! The dry bar was an addition they created with extra cabinets they had. It makes grabbing a cold beverage really convenient.
The guest bedroom is right off the kitchen and has a beautiful view of the skyline above the trees. My brother built that platform for the bed out of barnwood as well.

Now let's head upstairs to the master suite. There is a foyer at the landing of the steps that will be a perfect reading nook once they finish.
My brother and sister-in-law are currently working to redo the ceiling in their master suite on the top floor of the lake house. The first ceiling feature they created out of cedar fence boards was beautiful, but they had other plans for it! They removed all the boards and rebuilt it with coffers and accent lighting. It was beautiful before, and now it's incredible. Especially with the accent lighting!
The master en suite in through the door there. They finished the bathroom last year, so you can take a look back at those photos (spoiler alert: it's gorgeous).
The sunporch is another item on their long to-do list. They have rebuilt the porch and have plans to screen it in to create another living area.
It's so hard to choose a favorite room. BUT I would choose the sunporch. It's not done yet, but if I know my brother, it'll be amazing. I mean, just look at that view!
Justin and I have dreamed of our own lake house up north. Something we can make our own - and I know who I'll be asking for some ideas. ;)
