Leonore: The Story of The Ugly Reindeer

I've been on a quiet search for sheet music for about 2 years.  Sure, I could've gone on Ebay or Etsy and easily bought some with a click of a button.  That's right, I wanted the sheet music to find me.  This past Sunday I met my match during a trip to the used bookstore.  I asked Justin to take me so I could find an old novel with yellowed pages that I might use for projects.  That's when I saw her.  In an old dusty box in a dark corner, silently calling my name.  A box full of musty sheet music.  I apologize in advance for a slew of sheet music posts.

Here's the story of the Ugly Reindeer...

About two weeks ago, I bought this paper mache Christmas deer from Michael's at 50% off.  My first thought, other than "why am I buying this gold flaked deer?" was that she needs a makeover...stat.  Someone had to save her.

I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of the gold flakes and she was in desperate need.  Lucky for her, I had just found a stack of yellowed sheet music at the little 'ol used bookstore for $3.50, and I was lookin' for a project.

First, I did a quick spray of flat black Rustoleum spray paint on the antlers.  I didn't use take or use much caution since he was being covered with paper anyway.  (I painted the antlers in the makeshift paint booth in the basement).

Then, I started cutting the sheet music in random strips.  I buttered the back of each strip with Mod Podge using a foam brush and stuck 'er on.  After about 3 strips of paper I got a little impatient and just ripped the paper into random strips and squares - which turned out just fine.
After applying the paper, I spread a thin layer of Mod Podge over the layers.  I got very impatient and a little annoyed at my sweet deer after the 45 min. mark.  Thankfully, after one hour in, I met a friend for dinner, which helped to break up the project and kept me from ripping his head off.

After 3 hours, Leo and I both survived the experience.  And I think we were both very happy with the outcome.



 If you're wondering how she earned the name Leonore...I branded the reindeer with a song title.

I'm glad the gold flakes are safely hidden from view.  Hopefully she'll never have to show that side of herself again.

I have this great dream of making a custom mantle for my dining room.  I'm hoping to bring this dream to a realization...you know, since I've already planned my Christmas decorations for the mantle.  Maybe this weekend ;)
